Taste of Sailing —No experience necessary

Gain insight into the world of sailing! Instruction starts dockside with a safety briefing and life jacket fitting, followed by a deck walk through to introduce you to common nautical terms, and wraps up with line handling, boat awareness and physical stance demonstrations. Once underway the sails will be raised and you’ll be coached on sail trim, crew movement and helming. You’ll practice tacking and jibing while actively taking part in a discussion of sail propulsion and fluid dynamics. Everyone on board will be given the opportunity to helm and trim sails. You will have a chance to relax and take it all in, however you should be prepared to take part in some physical activity.

Introduction to Intermediate and Advanced Sailing Skills

Participants are expected to have completed ASA 101 Course or US Sailing Basic Keel Boat Course, or have similar sailing experience.
Learn the essential skills cruising sailors need to venture over the horizon with confidence. This 2-hour class covers:

  • Techniques for managing a sailboat under wind conditions and sea states that might be encountered in offshore and coastal cruising situations.
  • Advanced sail management – keeping the boat under control and in balance.
  • Powering up /De-powering in light or freshening winds.
  • Steering strategies in big seas.
  • Proper sail selection.
  • Advanced sail trim/shape— including use of sail controls, jib fairlead positioning, controlling draft, shortening and reefing sail.
  • Steering with sails

Please Note: The weather on San Francisco Bay in January can be unpredictable. Our team of skippers and shore crew will err on the side of safety and cancel a class or classes if conditions become unsafe, especially for novice sailors. If we decide to cancel your class you will receive a full refund. Please be prepared for sun, wind and or rain, and to have a lot of fun.

San Francisco Bay Sailing Experience

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be one of those people sailing on San Francisco Bay;

enjoying the sun, wind, and water? Have you asked yourself what skills you need to join them, or where they go, what they see, and what they are doing out there? After all of the excitement created by the recent America’s Cup, are you curious what it takes to race a sail boat on San Francisco Bay or why you’d even want to?  Then this sailing experience is for you!

Join us for a 2 ½ hour sail on San Francisco Bay. We’ll sail on a new 37 to 40 foot sailboat, provided by Passage Yachts, skippered by a licensed and experienced captain. We’ll show you around the San Francisco waterfront. You’ll see some of the restaurants and gathering places sailors typically stop at. If you join us on Saturday, you might catch a glimpse of the sailboats participating in the Three Bridge Fiasco Sailing Race, one of the largest sailing events on San Francisco Bay. You’ll get a whole new perspective of the Bay Area looking at it from the water.

Along the way we’ll teach you as much or as little as you want about how to sail. We’ll have a lively discussion about the types of sailing, the types of sailboats, and what it takes to become a competent and confident sailor. You’ll be welcome to participate; steering the boat, trimming the sails, and making proper and safe decisions. Of course, we’ll provide you with a complete explanation of the equipment on the boat, and a thorough safety briefing.

The cruise will be followed by a short social event so that you can review and relive your on-the-water experience, ask questions that were not answered on the water, chat with our staff, and enjoy a light snack and a beverage.

Cost for this program is $95 per person, or $175 per couple. Preregistration is encouraged as space is limited. If space is still available, onsite registration at the Discover Sailing Tent will be $20 more per person.
